Overview – Notice boards
Notice boards also referred to as bulletin boards or pin boards, are large pieces of cork or similar material to which information notices can be pinned or attached. Notice boards are effective when used as a supplementary communication tactic for a broad spectrum of information ranging from social news to health and safety policies.
Optimum location improves notice-board effectiveness. Functional notice boards have a layout design that enables employees to check for information at a glance. Nominated sections of a notice board are allocated for the display of specific topics of interest. Those topics should address both the organisation’s and employees’ communication needs.
This tactic is useful for:
✓ Consolidating separate communication pieces into one location for employees without access to email or the intranet.
✓ Reinforcing information delivered by other tactics.
✓ Presenting a visual display of important information.
✓ Providing instructions or updates e.g. safety requirements, social/informal news.
✓ Meeting legal requirements regarding the display of information.
Things to consider:
⇒ Assess the type of information to be displayed on a notice board. Determine broad subject categories for that information. Designate a specific area on the notice board for each category of information so employees know where to look at a glance. For example, the layout of a notice board might look like this:
⇒ Assign a caretaker to each notice board to ensure it is kept up-to-date and the information is displayed to its best advantage.
⇒ Include relevant contact details on notices for employees to obtain further information if necessary.
Update notice boards regularly to avoid information becoming out-of-date and their appearance deteriorating into a messy clutter. This encourages employees to frequently check for the latest information.
